Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The best-known type of silk is obtained from cocoons made by the larvae of the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fiber which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles thus producing different colors. Silks are produced by several other insects, but only the silk of moth caterpillars has been used for textile manufacture. There has been some research into other silks, which differ at the molecular level. Silks are mainly produced by the larvae of insects that complete metamorphosis, but also by some adult insects such as webspinners. Silk production is especially common in the Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, and ants), and is sometimes used in nest construction. Other types of arthropod produce silk, most notably various arachnids such as spiders (see spider silk). From Wikipedia under the

Q. My friend wants to use the Dupioni silk from India to make fashion bags and wants to make sure that silk worms are not harmed during this process. If so does anyone have other suggestions? Asked by Cheerio - Tue Jun 17 20:28:56 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. If it's real silk - from silkworms...then yes, they are harmed in the process. When they pupate, the cocoons are boiled and un-wound to get the silk. The larvae do not survive that process. If you need an organic fabric or material that does not come from animals, cotton or linen are options. Answered by Cat - Tue Jun 17 21:16:56 2008 How do I make my ivory silk robe white again? Q. I have an ivory white robe that I have worned for a while. When it was new, it was really white Now it has a brownish color to it. I've only dry cleaned it with Dryel but that doesn't seem to get rid of the brown hue. Of course, I don't want to use bleach since that would ruin the silk altogether. Q. i just had my acrylic soaked off. and i was horrified by what i saw underneath. my nail looked so bad, and it was as thin as paper, i let them put the silk wrap on anyway because it looked so bad. if i wanted to eventually stop putting this stuff on my nails. what is the best way to transition to natural. i dont want to go through the soak again, its a very strong chemical. Asked by princessmorrie - Fri Jun 13 22:52:30 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well unfortunatly thats the only way. Once you have acylic nails it will take approx 6 months for them to grow back naturally. So what I did was I got a buffer for nails and then put 3 coats of a real good clear topcoat on until they get strong. I love the look of those nails but I agree I hate the after effects of taking them off too. Answered by C c - Fri Jun 13 23:04:45 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Silk" |
